Wondering what products to use in your pool?
I have run PoolBuilders.co.za for nearly 15 years and have owned pools for quite sometime before that. Over the years I have used many different products in my own pools and have seen what works for me. I include my favourite products here and hope that my experience benefits you.
Badu Eco Wise Cartridge Filter from Speck Pumps
Why I love this product
Two of my previous homes have had swimming pools and both used sand filters. We have recently moved to a new home and I had the opportunity to start from scratch. I decided to use a cartridge filter mainly because of the water saving that it offers. There is no back-washing needed and all I need to do is screw off the lid, remove the filter cartridge and rinse the cartridge. I use a small pressure washer linked to a rainwater tank so I effectively clean my filter without the loss of any water.
Cleaning a cartridge filter uses a lot less water than back-washing a sand filter but that is not the only benefit. I have noticed that my pool is staying beautifully clean despite me using way less chlorine. Admittedly it is still early in the season and there is no swimming happening at the moment but with my previously sand-filtered pools once the chlorine ran low the pool soon went green. That is probably because my cartridge filter removes dirt down to just 10 microns in size. The smallest particles that a sand filter will remove is around 20 microns.
Added to this my cartridge filter operates at a much lower pressure using less electricity.
On the downside I seem to be cleaning my cartridge filter a little more regularly than I back-washed my sand filters. It is a minor issue for me though as I value the water and electricity savings along with the cleaner water and chemical savings.
BADU®Eco Touch - Variable Speed Pool Pump from Speck Pumps
Why I love this product
I had Paul from Pelican Pools Port Elizabeth deal closely with the guys from Speck Pumps when he installed my pool plumbing. By following the Speck Pumps instructions closely I now have a pool that is wonderfully power efficient. The pipes have a larger that normal diameter and we have two return points into the pool. This helps reduce the pressure in the filtration system.
By combining the variable speed pump with a low pressure canister filter we seem to have created the perfect match. The combination is actually sold as a unit by Speck Pumps so all we needed to do is make sure that we get the plumbing right.
The pump has three setting: low medium and high and my pump is almost always set to low. The low setting uses less electricity and the pump also makes less noise.
On the downside, well actually I see no downside here. The pump is a little more expensive but you would be stupid not to buy a variable speed pump for your pool.
I recommend the Badu Eco Touch from Speck Pumps with great confidence!
