Since eclear is a chemical free water disinfection system, it is important to have the correct filters and pumps (flow rate) specified for the pool and taking into account body loads. With eclear you can’t “cheat” by adding more chemicals, which typically happens in this country. In chlorine and salt pools it is extremely important to ensure that harmful disinfection byproducts (DBPs) are kept to a minimum. Good flow rate and adequate filtration is imperative to keep DBPs to a minimum.

ALSO There is a perception amongst the public (from years of marketing deception) that salt pools are chlorine free and ECO friendly and that they do not produce any chlorine or harmful disinfection byproducts (DBPs). THIS IS NOT TRUE!!!! Although salt pools feel soft on the skin because of the salt, they generate extremely aggressive, highly reactive and toxic form of chlorine. A paper by Beech et al (AJPH, 1980, Vol 70 (1) p79-82 – Available for down load in our Pool Resources area) investigated levels of THMs in public chlorine and salt pools in the Miami area. The standard set by the EPA in drinking water as “safe” is max. 100 micrograms per liter. They measured up to 430 micrograms per liter of THMs in chlorine pools (mainly in the form of chloroform) and up to 1300 micrograms per liter of THMs in salt pools (mainly in the form of Bromoform). SALT POOLS CONTAINED AT LEAST THREE TIMES MORE DBPs THAN CHLORINE POOLS AND 10 TIMES MORE THAN WHAT IS REGARDED AS SAFE. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT SALT POOLS BE DRAINED REGULARLY TO PREVENT BROMOFORM ACCUMULATION IN THE WATER. Bromoform is a confirmed carcinogen in animals, extremely toxic to aquatic life and is absorbed into the body by inhalation and through the skin. Bromoform is particularly harmful to the environment because it persists in the environment.
